New Zealand – a country where there are fewer people than there are vending ma- chines in Japan; where there is a National Wizard, appointed by the Prime Minister, and where the food and drink is so routinely good that we’ve all met a Kiwi that made us feel bad about the food and drink we eat.
This month’s wine list has been thrown together by Melanie Brown, who cut her teeth at amazing-Kiwi-food-place Providores and is now running amazing-Kiwi-wine-website The New Zealand Cellar. The list has an emphasis on mixed cases showing regions, va- rietal differences and diversity NZ has to offer, and to celebrate she has chosen four of her favourites for the month, which should help everyone feel pretty damn good about what they’re eating and drinking.
SERESIN, ‘MEMENTO’ RIESLING 2011 Marlborough, New Zealand Michael Seresin is one of those rare people who has managed to make a name for himself in two quite distinct fields: filmmaking and wine. Having worked on films including Harry Potter he has now returned to his native New Zealand to make wine, and we for one are glad he has. Aromatic, zesty and bone dry this riesling has a transparency; allowing the quality of the vineyard to show.5.50 30.50
MILLTON RIVERPOINT VIOGNIER 2011 Gisborne, New Zealand Pioneering biodynamics and organic winemaking in the New World, James Millton has brought Gisbourne into the limelight. Not to get too ‘wine chat’ but this Viognier is like a warm croissant with apricot jam; a French breakfasty hug. Delicately fruity with a clean mineral finish, pure genius in a bottle.31.00
GREYWACKE, ‘WILD’ SAUVIGNON BLANC 2012 Marlborough, New Zealand It’s Marlborough Sauvignon, but not as you know it. A masterful New Zealand Sauvignon unusually fermented in old oak, it lies somewhere between white Burgundy and white Bordeaux with a hint of grapefruity tang. In other words, it‘s a stunning wine.42.00
KALEX PINOT NOIR 2012 Central Otago, New Zealand Alex Kaufman, owner of Kalex, describes himself as ‘businessman, entreprenu- er and survivor’. Now retired Alex’s passion for fine wine has led him to Central Otago in New Zealand. Blended from fruit in several sub-regions this classy and complex Pinot has lashings of dark fruit and chocolatey, earthy spice. Delicious.8.00 48.00
